KREITNER, Kenneth, 'Two Early Morales Magnificat Settings', in Cristóbal de Morales: Sources, Influences, Reception, ed. Owen Rees and Bernadette Nelson, Woodbridge, The Boydell Press, 2007, pp. 21-61

Reading of this piece suggests that it was copied from a manuscript rather than from a printed version (see Rees 1995, p. 224). Both this copy and that in MM 9 present an alternative 2-voice version of the verse 'Suscepit Israel', as distinct from the 4-voice version in the print. (In MM 9, another scribe added the 4-voice version from the print.) This a2 verse derives from an earlier Magnificat in the 1st tone by Morales found in E-V 5 and two more Spanish manuscripts (see Kreitner, 2007); it is also intabulated in Miguel de Fuenllana's Orphénica lyra (Seville 1554)
