Description of the notation

Single red line for notation. Medium-sized neumes. Simple custodes, not placed on every line. Scribe shows careful alignment of neumes within the notational space.

Decoration

Red and blue initials with simple pen-flourishing at the beginning of chants; smaller red initials for verses. Rubrics in red.

Inscriptions

Inscriptions on Bv–Ar only: in red pencil, “102”; in blue pen, “Caixa 287 nº 3”; in brown ink, twice, “S.ta Maria de Grade”; further inscription, almost illegible, “Tombo de (…) Grade.” Santa Maria de Grade, near Arcos de Valdevez, formerly belonged to the archdiocese of Braga.

Material
Condition of document

Generally good. Text and notation largely legible. Upper and lower margins trimmed, with probable loss of one line of notation or two lines of text on each side. Additional cuts on fol. A, likely from its reuse as a book cover, as suggested by central folds. Few stains from humidity and handling.

Page layout

Two columns. At least thirty alternating lines of text and music. Fol. B shows text only, in two columns of similar extent.

Foliation/Pagination

Bifolium without pagination; content discontinuous.
