The chants seem to have no match in indexed liturgical sources at the time of the present description (Sept. 2026), but the texts correspond to the Vita sancti Anthonini martyris edita a domno Pascali papa (c. 1100) and can therefore be associated with St. Antoninus, whose cult extended to the Braga / Guimarães region (Vila Verde, Mesão Frio).

Description of the notation

Square notation (southern variety: oblique pes and scandicus) on 5 red lines; C and F clefs, custodes.

Decoration

No initials detected. Rubrics in red.

Inscriptions

On the verso side there are a few inscriptions and two library stickers. The only modern inscription (visible on the recto side due to the fold of the folio) reads "A-3-1-63". Of the brown ink inscriptions only one is partially readable, due to the poor condition of the fragment: on the right part of the folio, "Contas e Foros ... de 1600 athe 1601". The library sticker with a blue frame reads "515 / A-3-1-63"; the other one, white, reads "Fazenda Nº 29".

Condition of document

Page layout

Single column of text and music, alternated lines. At least 6 lines each.

Foliation/Pagination

No foliation/pagination.

Remarks

The hagiographical texts from which these chants were drawn, and allowed the reconstruction of their texts, are:

Cum quibus vir beatissimus decem et octo annis in eremo commanens, igne succensus divini amoris, de virtute in virtutem ad altiora conscendens ...

In quo vir pius et sacratissimus ac Deo dilectus inter christicolas permanens, alacriter toto corde martyrii coronam accipere desiderans, numquam a sancta praedicatione cessabat.
