Description of the notation

The small font size and the dry-point line, often imperceptible, suggest an early date. The custos features the head to the right of the vertical line.

Decoration

Clear and legible early gothic script, with tall "s" at the end of words. The conjunction "et" is often represented by a Tironian sign. It contains almost no other abbreviations. The initials letters are mostly simple, in black ink. The first letters of "Saturninus" (Ar) and "Dum" (Br) are painted in red; the latter is the only ornamented capital letter.

Inscriptions

In Av there is an illegible signature. Other illegible inscriptions in the lower and right margins of Br.

Material
Condition of document

The document, a bifolio, is in good condition, especially folios Bv-Ar, part attached to the book cover. It contains 14 lines for notation and text. Bv has a brown stain at the lower left, which makes it somewhat difficult to read. Av is in a precarious state, with the parchment dirty and worn. Both folios contain small holes, but these do not affect the content.

Page layout

One full-page column in each folio. 14 lines of notation alternating with text, but the top line of notation is not preserved due to the trimming of the top border of the folio.

Foliation/Pagination

The original foliation is missing, probably due to the trimming of the top border of the folio.

Remarks

Contains part of the office for Saint Saturninus, bishop of Toulouse, much revered in southwestern France and in the Iberian Peninsula, especially Catalonia.

Indexing notes

In order to identify the mode of each chant, we based our proposal on Cantus Index, as well as on aspects such as the position of the tonic in relation to the dry-point line, the psalmodic intonations, the melodic range and melodic formulas.
