All chants in this fragment were sung at Matins in the same liturgical occasion which remains, unfortunately, unidentified. The first four chants in Frag. 10 can be also read in P-BRs Ms. 28 for the liturgical feast 'Comm.un.Con.non Pon.vel Abb.' but the chants are found there in a different order (further details are provided in each chant record in the musical index of this fragment- see the list in the right-hand side on this page). P-BRs Ms. 28 is an Antiphoner representative of the liturgical use of the Cathedral of Braga (the manuscript is available at http://pemdatabase.eu/source/4547). The fifth and last chant in Frag. 10 (Cantus ID a00406) is assigned to 'Comm. un. Conf.Pont.' in P-BRs Ms. 28. The chants in Frag. 10 have been also compared with the 'Breviarium Braccarense' printed by João Gherlinc for Pedro de Barzena in 1492. In the Breviarium Braccarense the Commune Sanctorum starts on fol. 308r (see IMAGE 589 in the PDF file) while the chants of Frag. 10 are found on fol. 327rv with the same liturgical order as in Ms. 28. Regarding the responsory verse 'Gloria et' (Cantus ID 007062zc), the presence of the trope 'et iusticia eius' seems to be peculiar to three Braga sources, that is, P-BRs Frag. 10, P-BRs Ms. 28, and the Breviarium Braccarense.

Description of the notation

Big size neumes. The difference between a lozenge and a more or less square punctum is always clearly defined. The axis of the notation is vertical. The lozenge is randomly used at different heights always as part of compound neumes in a descending melodic movement. The lozenge is not used in isolation.

This fragment belongs to a group of fragments currently held in P-BRs and P-G which share the same style of notation: P-BRs Fragments 1, 3, 10 (fragments 1 and 3 originally belonged to the same codex); P-G C 1372, C 1429, N 133 (fragments C 1372 and N 133 originally belonged to the same codex), N 161, and P 217. From a notational standpoint, the main difference between these sources is the shape of the custos, however, P-G C 1429 and P 217 are too mutilated and today we don't know if custodes were originally written on these sources or not.

Condition of document

Single-leaf fragment in poor condition and badly mutilated. The fragment has been used as cover and for this reason it has been trimmed to fit the size of the book it still covers. About 40% of the original sheet has been cut out and it is now lost. It is possible to read only the bottom half of the original sheet.
