P-G (Guimarães) Arquivo Municipal Alfredo Pimenta P 886
P-G P 886
Two responsories generally assigned to Holy Thursday, and a lesson taken from St Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, 11: 27–29.
Square notation, southern type, on 5 red lines. One clef, left-headed custodes (stem upwards).
Alternated simple blue and red initials for chants. Rubrics in red.
On the recto side there are two modern inscriptions, one in pen and one in pencil, that read respectively "B-16-2-7" and "P-886". On the verso there are some inscriptions in black ink and two pieces of paper glued to the parchment. One of these is a sticker which reproduces, in clearer form, and supplements the information scribbled in ink, identifying the contents enclosed — mixed records of births, baptisms and passings in the rural parish of Vermil (Guimarães) —: "Vermil / (S. Mamede) / Misto / Obt. 4-6-1614 — 12-5-1675 / Nasc. 29-1-1623 … 25-11-1675 / Cas. 7-2-1616 — 15-12-1680".
Fair. The folio has been slightly cut to fit the size of the book enclosed, leading to partial content loss. The external side of the cover is quite dirty and sometimes not easily readable.
Single column. The textual part and the music part do not share the same line-size. The page with music only features 8 lines of music alternated with 8 lines of text.
No foliation/pagination.
While both the responsories, Seniores populi and Revelaverunt, are found in the printed Braga Breviary of 1494 in this same order, respectively after the eight and the ninth lessons (the ninth lesson also coincides with that in the fragment), the verse of Seniores is not Collegerunt ergo — a characteristic choice shared with Compostela, Zamora, Tuy and Salamanca —, but another verse, Qui autem tradidit eum (taken from Matthew 26:48) which is even rarer, but is also found in an antiphoner from Marseilles, F-Pn lat. 1090, fol. 68r (=67).
