Antiphons, preces and introit chants for the Rogations Days of May (before Ascension Thursday), and Song of the Sibyl, fully notated, according to the Braga tradition. This repertoire, transmitted to Braga through Aquitanian channels, was shared by the Hispanic and Gallican rites before the adoption of Roman-Frankish chant.
Square notation (southern variety) on 5 red lines. One clef, left-headed custodes (stem upwards). At page 10v the notation of the Kyrie and its verse, which was originally semi-mensural, was later changed to conform to black mensural notation.
Black and red, simple initials. Rubrics in red.
On the final guard leaf recto there is one inscription in light brown ink that reads "Antonio ferna[n]des / MC." On the verso of the same guard leaf there are several inscriptions in black, brown and pencil . The one in black ink reads: "Aos 12 de Março / ... 1685" and gives the date when the writing was completed. Those in brown ink are drawings or unreadable inscriptions; in pencil, from modern times, three numbers were written, "1685 / 1882 / 197".
Good. The book has a velvet cover and is well preserved except for some spots and humidity here and there. It is entirely readable, sometimes with some effort. Some chants show several corrections in the text.
Single column, 5 lines of music alternated with 5 lines of text.
13 folios (+ guard leaves), measuring c. 190-200 x 180-185 mm. No visible numeration.
This book did not have a call number until recently and was once identified as "Armário 1". Rubrics in Latin and Portuguese: "Exeuntes de aecclesia. antiphona" (1r); "fferia III. Introitus" (4r); "fferia 3a rogationibus" (6r); "feria 4a Introitus" (7r); "Ex[e]untes de ecclesia antiphona" (7v); "Hos dous conegos" (10v) and instructions concerning the choral responses (for detailed comments, see the indexed chants).
