From the front paste-down to initial guard-leaf 3v there are several notated chants, including an incomplete mass (Missa Votiva de Angelis). Then, the book is divided into three sections. The first (fols. 2-48v) goes from St. Andrew (beginning of Advent) to St. Catherine, covering the liturgical year; it is followed by the Dedication of a Church. The second is the Common of Saints (fols. 51r-104v). Then a collection is given of further chants, ordered by genre: Introits, Graduals, Alleluias, Offertories, Communions (fols. 105-116v). A supplement with chants for different saints is given at the end (fols. 117-118). An unrelated notated folio serves as the final guard-leaf.

Type of script
Type of notation
Description of the notation

Square notation on a red five-line stave.

Decoration

Blue, red and blue/red capital letters with filigree and flourished ornamentation. Plain red or black capital letters. According to Magalhães, the scribe of the original core of P-Gmas LC 011 was António Pais de Coimbra and the decorations were made by monk Jorge de Santarém. 69 decorated initials were cut out.

Inscriptions

Modern hand addition on fol. 78: "José Candido Martins Guimarães 17/7/92".

Material
Condition of document

Some folios are missing (1, 33, 34, 38, 81, 82, 88, 111, 119). Some margins were cut without interfering with the text. Many decorated capitals were cut.

Page layout

800 x 540 x 90 mm; 760 x 530 mm; one column 600 x 400 mm

Foliation/Pagination

Original foliation in Roman numerals from fol. 2 to fol. 118, which corresponds to the original core of the codex. This is a composite manuscript made up of two additional sections of three folios each placed at the beginning and the end of the original manuscript. These added sections bear no foliation/pagination but they contain musical notation. According to Magalhães eight folios are missing: fols. 1, 33, 34, 38, 81, 82, 88, and 111. There is also a reference, on fol. 3v, which indicates that a certain chant can be found on fol. 119. However, this manuscript only has 118 folios, so it is likely that fol. 119 was also lost.

Bindings

Leather over boards.

Remarks

In the catalogue of the Museu Alberto Sampaio, P-Gmas LC 011 has the call number 1056. According to Magalhães, the fact that there are several manuscripts from the same scribe (António Pais de Coimbra) may be an indicator that the Santa Marinha da Costa Monastery had a scriptorium. Furthermore, this monastery became an important place as it was made into a University, by the time this manuscript was made. Magalhães also mentions that this manuscript was probably used in the Monastery of Santa Marinha da Costa.
